We know that brushing your child's teeth is an important part of keeping their smile healthy, and starting good habits early can make a big difference.

We recommend brushing twice a day, in the morning and before bed, using a soft-bristled toothbrush and a small amount of fluoride toothpaste. For children under 3, a rice-sized amount of toothpaste is enough, and for children ages 3 and older, a pea-sized amount is appropriate.
When brushing, we suggest using gentle, small circular motions to clean the front, back, and chewing surfaces of each tooth, as well as the gumline, where plaque can build up. It is also important to brush for a full two minutes so every part of the mouth gets the attention it needs.
For younger children, we encourage parents and caregivers to help with brushing, since little ones often do not yet have the coordination to clean their teeth thoroughly on their own. Even when children want to brush independently, it is helpful for an adult to follow up and make sure all areas were cleaned well.
We also recommend making brushing a positive part of the daily routine by using a timer, singing a song, or letting your child choose a favorite toothbrush. These simple steps can help children feel more comfortable and engaged, which may make brushing easier to maintain over time.
If your child resists brushing, staying calm and consistent can help them learn that oral care is just a normal part of the day. Along with brushing, we remind families that healthy teeth also depend on regular dental visits, a balanced diet, and limiting sugary snacks and drinks. Preventive care is especially important because it can help catch small concerns before they become bigger problems. By brushing your child's teeth carefully and consistently, you are helping protect their smile, support healthy development, and build habits that can last a lifetime.
